Tourism marketing: strategies to enhance management and leadership in the sector

Publicado: | Actualizado:

Promoting specific destinations, improving the visibility of tourism brands in new markets, or launching products and services related to the sector are just some of the benefits of tourism marketing. In this article, we will analyze how these strategies drive the development of the sector and the main key aspects of this specialized discipline.

The tourism sector closed 2024 with more than 200 billion euros in revenue. Without a doubt, it is one of the most important sectors in terms of contribution to Spain’s GDP, accounting for more than 13% after last year’s results. This success would not be possible without the implementation of marketing and communication campaigns to promote key destinations, products, and services in the sector.

In this context, tourism marketing plays an essential role. We will explore what it consists of, its importance, and the main initiatives and methods used in the sector. In an increasingly competitive environment, this discipline requires specialized professionals to meet the demands of companies, organizations, and entities within the industry.

What is tourism marketing?

It is essential to clearly understand what tourism marketing refers to in order to frame the topic of discussion. What does this marketing approach involve? What types of companies, brands, and professionals can use it?

  • Tourism marketing refers to advertising and communication activities carried out in relation to the tourism industry.
  • These are actions specifically designed to promote companies, products, and services in this sector.
  • They may include both strategies aimed at attracting new customers and those focused on retaining existing ones.
  • The main beneficiaries include the following operators:
  1. Destinations
  2. Travel agencies
  3. Hotels and other accommodation options
  4. Transport services
  5. Airlines
  6. Cultural offerings: museums, galleries, leisure facilities, etc.
  7. Restaurants

Both destinations and tourism operators can benefit from strategies designed to increase visibility, improve visitor flow, and generate higher economic returns. These initiatives not only boost the growth of each individual stakeholder but also contribute to the significant economic weight of the tourism sector in Spain, as reflected in the figures mentioned at the beginning of this article.

Importance of tourism marketing

The survival of companies in the sector and even the improvement of a country’s economy depend, among other factors, on an adequate tourism marketing strategy. Increasingly, this industry is becoming a key global driver, which is why countries invest resources in promoting tourism.

Among the benefits of tourism marketing, the following stand out:

  • Positions companies and organizations against competitors.
  • Increases brand visibility.
  • Boosts the number of consumers and users.
  • Improves companies’ financial results.
  • Facilitates entry into new markets and access to different audiences.
  • Enhances the identity of a destination, product, or service.

Types of tourism marketing

There are different types of tourism marketing, each focusing on a different objective. These are the most well-known types today:

Destination marketing

Positioning a place—whether an entire country, a city, or a municipality—to make it an attractive travel destination is the essence of destination marketing. To achieve this, the qualities of the location must be highlighted, directly and indirectly benefiting numerous service and product companies and professionals—such as tour guides.

Experience marketing

In this case, the focus is on a specific activity linked to a destination. Some examples include gastronomy in Málaga and the Costa del Sol; hiking in the Catalan Pyrenees; wellness and well-being in spa towns such as Mondariz (Pontevedra) or Burgo de Osma (Soria), among others.

Sustainable marketing

This type refers to tourism focused on the sustainability of destinations. This is essential because tourism activity can have negative environmental impacts due to transport pollution and the effects of excessive visitor numbers. For this reason, there has recently been a focus on ensuring that travel and holidays go hand in hand with respect for the environment and ecosystems, as well as the protection and preservation of local traditions and communities.

Marketing for tourism products and services

Tourism products and services often contribute to destination marketing. In this case, however, the focus is different, as it includes initiatives such as renting vehicles to explore a destination or purchasing credit cards or health insurance for people traveling abroad. These are just examples of the many branches of the tourism industry.

Characteristics of tourism marketing

The different types of tourism marketing share a series of characteristics that bring these actions together under a single framework. What are these qualities?

  • Working towards a specific objective.
  • Promotional actions based on a defined goal.
  • Strategies aimed both at attracting new customers and retaining existing ones.

All of this is implemented through activities such as search engine optimization to improve visibility against competitors; social media actions to engage audiences; campaigns at trade fairs to promote a destination’s value; etc.
