Postgraduate degree: what it is and what it is used for

Publicado: | Actualizado:

In Latin America, having an undergraduate degree or bachelor’s degree is now the starting point for entering the job market. However, due to increasing competitiveness, this qualification is no longer enough to stand out or advance. According to the LinkedIn Learning Workplace Learning Report 2025, employees’ main motivation for continuing to learn is career advancement. In this context, postgraduate studies are becoming a strategic tool to strengthen employability and professional specialization, driving the progress of those who seek to adapt and lead in changing environments.

What is a postgraduate degree?

A postgraduate degree is an academic program taken after completing a bachelor’s degree or university studies. Its purpose is professional specialization, meaning to deepen knowledge in a specific area or acquire new applied skills.
Unlike undergraduate studies, which provide general education, postgraduate programs allow for more technical and focused training, responding to needs identified during professional practice. This type of education enables both improved job performance and career reorientation or access to higher-responsibility positions.
To enroll in a postgraduate program, a recognized university degree is required, approved by the Ministry of Education or the relevant authorities in each country. In Latin America, postgraduate programs are key to updating and maintaining professional competencies, ensuring graduates remain relevant in a rapidly evolving job market.

What is a postgraduate degree for?

Deciding to pursue a postgraduate degree means committing to tangible growth, both economically and professionally. The benefits of this training range from higher salaries and improved employability to the development of strategic skills and expanded professional networks.

  • Impact on income: the return on investment of a postgraduate degree is significant. In Colombia, the Ministry of National Education states that a postgraduate graduate earns 2.2 times more than an undergraduate graduate. In Peru, professionals with a master’s degree earn up to 40% more income, while in Mexico, a master’s in administration can increase salaries by 68%, and a master’s in finance by up to 127% (sources: Ministry of Education reports and specialized portals). This increase reflects the value companies place on advanced skills and leadership capacity acquired through higher education.
  • Improved employability and competitiveness: beyond salary impact, a postgraduate degree significantly improves job opportunities. In Colombia, 92.5% of recent postgraduate graduates successfully enter the formal labor market, compared to 77.3% of undergraduate graduates. This shows that advanced education not only increases salaries but also improves job quality. Additionally, in the context of technological transformation and the rise of artificial intelligence, postgraduate studies represent a strategy for continuous professional updating in an evolving labor environment.
  • Development of advanced skills: postgraduate programs are designed to strengthen both technical skills (hard skills) and soft skills. Among the most important are critical thinking, effective communication, leadership, and team management. On the technical side, Latin American companies increasingly demand specialists in data analysis and digital transformation, skills developed in programs such as the Master in Big Data and Analytics. This training enables data-driven decision-making, a key competence in modern management.
  • Networking and professional opportunities: a postgraduate degree also serves as a platform for strategic networking. In the Latin American business environment, where professional relationships are essential, this education offers the opportunity to connect with expert professors, industry leaders, and peers from different disciplines and countries. These networks open doors to collaborations, jobs, and international projects, strengthening long-term career growth.

Types of postgraduate degrees

The term postgraduate includes different levels of education, each with distinct objectives and scopes. In Latin America, three main categories are usually distinguished: specialization, master’s degree, and doctorate. Before choosing, it is important to understand that each type responds to a specific professional path, whether technical, managerial, or academic.

  • Specialization: this is the first level of postgraduate education and the shortest in duration. Its focus is on deepening technical and methodological knowledge in a specific area. It is ideal for those who want to update their skills without leaving their professional field or committing to long research projects.
  • Master’s degree: the master’s is the most popular postgraduate program in the professional field. Its purpose is to provide advanced training in management, leadership, and decision-making, preparing students for strategic or managerial positions. For example, the Master in Marketing and Commercial Management trains professionals capable of designing business strategies and leading teams in global contexts, a key competence in the Latin American market.
  • Doctorate: the doctorate represents the highest level of postgraduate education. Its goal is to train researchers who generate original knowledge through a doctoral thesis. It is aimed at those seeking an academic or scientific career and wishing to contribute to the intellectual and social development of their country or region.
  • Master vs. Maestría: In Latin America, both terms are equivalent. “Maestría” is the official term used by ministries of education, while “master” is the term adopted by European universities within the European Higher Education Area (Bologna Process). Both degrees are recognized and equivalent, and offer the same academic level and international career prospects.
