In a constantly changing society, companies must always stay up to date with ongoing transformations in order to seize opportunities. New markets frequently emerge, and strong skills and strategic vision are required to identify and access them. There is a professional figure who embodies this dynamism, creativity, and determination: the Business Developer (BD). This “opportunity architect” plays a crucial role in exploring new horizons and opening doors to a prosperous future for companies. In this article, we will try to understand what a Business Developer is and the skills that guide their professional path.

The Business Developer, or business development manager, is the professional figure who analyzes the company’s current situation in relation to its target market, which they know in depth, as well as its existing customers. Their goal is to identify new potential customers and new business opportunities. Becoming a BD requires proper training, but the career path is very interesting.

What is a Business Developer

The first answer to the question of what a Business Developer is could be: a strategist. A manager with strong economic skills and excellent analytical ability, combined with a long-term vision. In this sense, the Business Developer role cannot be a junior position, as the responsibilities of business development require solid experience within the company to fully understand it.

The most important part of their job is the search for new business opportunities, an activity that requires a deep understanding of the target market and the company’s position within it. The Business Developer focuses on growing the company by establishing and developing relationships with clients, suppliers, and partners in order to improve results.

According to a Forbes article, the BD’s role can be summarized as: “the creation of long-term value for an organization from customers, markets, and relationships.” Therefore, to be an excellent business developer, it is necessary to adapt to the changing needs of all these components. This requires strategic planning, positioning in the right markets, and continuous improvement through ongoing training.

Skills of a Business Development Manager

To better understand what a Business Developer is, it is important to know that specific skills are required, ranging from strategic to relational abilities, known as soft skills. These key skills can be summarized as follows.

Strategic planning skills

  • Developing long-term strategic plans to drive business success.
  • Defining clear and measurable objectives to monitor progress.
  • Flexibility to adapt strategies according to changing market needs.

Relational skills

  • Developing long-term relationships with customers to foster loyalty.
  • Networking skills to build relationships with key industry figures.
  • Empathy to create meaningful connections.

Leadership

  • Ability to motivate and lead teams to achieve company goals.
  • Promoting a collaborative and stimulating work environment.
  • Sense of responsibility and effective change management.

The BD’s activity also extends to the marketing sector, with which they collaborate to define new strategies aligned with the business model. Finally, they must also interact with the IT department, as many transformations today depend on technology. The role of the business developer is therefore multifaceted and complex, especially in large companies, but also in SMEs, where finding new areas of growth represents a major challenge.

The Business Developer should not be confused with the account manager (account manager). While both professionals may overlap and work closely with external relationships and customers, their roles differ. The account manager focuses on the current situation, while the business developer identifies alternative growth paths. The account manager typically offers products and services to existing clients, whereas the Business Developer seeks new markets and new customers.

Business Developer Functions

A Business Developer is responsible for developing and implementing strategies that enable the company to achieve growth objectives and create new opportunities. As mentioned, the BD works closely with various company departments, including sales, marketing, product development, and management.

Main functions of a BD include:

  • Market analysis: conducting market research to identify new business opportunities by analyzing trends, competition, and customer needs.
  • Strategic planning: using gathered information to develop strategies for company growth and market positioning.
  • Customer acquisition: actively seeking and acquiring new markets and expanding the customer base.
  • Relationship development: building and maintaining relationships with clients, partners, and stakeholders.

To become a Business Developer, a background in economics is required. A degree in marketing can also be useful if complemented with a Global MBA or specialized courses in economics and finance. For those aspiring to this profession, a degree in business administration is a strong starting point.

After completing studies, it is essential to gain at least five to six years of professional experience in a company to understand its real needs and internal processes. Finally, a good business developer must continuously update their skills, especially in relation to new technologies.
