Studying abroad has become one of the most strategic academic decisions in recent years. According to the OECD, more than six million students pursue higher education outside their home country; over 80% of them choose developed economies. This trend is driven by the search for high-quality education, international employability, and professional growth. In this context, Spain, and especially Barcelona, has gained prominence thanks to its combination of academic excellence, affordability, and quality of life.

Countries with the best education systems

When analyzing destinations with the strongest academic reputation for 2026, the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, and Australia stand out. These countries lead international rankings due to their investment in educational innovation, career prospects, and strong university–industry collaboration.

However, the choice of destination is increasingly shifting from the national level to the city level, where factors such as affordability, safety, and student life play a key role. The QS Best Student Cities 2025 ranking places Seoul, Tokyo, and London as the top three cities for international students.

In Europe, Barcelona stands out as Spain’s leading university hub, ranking 35th worldwide. The QS study highlights its “balance between affordability, climate, and educational quality.” According to data from the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities, Spain hosts more than 100,000 international students in undergraduate programs, representing 7.2% of the total.

Barcelona is particularly attractive to international students thanks to its wide range of global programs, including the International MBA and the Global MBA offered by EAE Barcelona, designed to develop leaders with a multicultural perspective and the ability to adapt to new economic environments.

Advantages of studying abroad

Beyond academic prestige, studying in another country is an investment that expands a student’s professional capital. International experience enhances key skills that companies actively seek. According to LinkedIn’s Workplace Learning Report 2025, analytical thinking, adaptability, and cross-cultural communication are among the most in-demand competencies for global employers.

These skills translate into greater employability and international career prospects. In Spain, 75% of companies report difficulties finding qualified talent, according to ManpowerGroup’s Talent Shortage 2025 report. A professional with international education and experience not only stands out in recruitment processes but also helps address talent shortages in emerging sectors.

In fields such as digital marketing or data analytics—considered among the most in-demand marketing careers, exposure to multicultural environments strengthens strategic thinking and the ability to innovate.

In addition, the return on investment (ROI) is tangible. The Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC) estimates that MBA graduates in the United States achieve average starting salaries of 120,000 dollars, with significantly higher lifetime earnings compared to graduates without international experience. This confirms that studying abroad is also a smart financial decision.

How to choose where to study: key factors to consider

Choosing the right destination requires considering more than just rankings. Key factors include the quality of the program, career opportunities after graduation, the overall cost of living, and visa requirements.

The cost of living is a crucial variable. According to Numbeo data, Barcelona offers a strong balance between quality and affordability, with moderate prices compared to other European capitals. This makes it a competitive destination for international students seeking a global education without excessive costs.

Another important aspect is legal requirements. Since May 2025, the new Immigration Regulation has changed the process for applying for a student visa in Spain. From that date, applications must be submitted from the student’s country of origin or legal residence, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation. It is therefore essential to check updated requirements before planning any move.

What language level do you need depending on the country or program?

Language is a key requirement for accessing international programs. In most cases, universities require an official certification to prove language proficiency.
For programs taught in English, the most widely recognized exams are:

  • TOEFL iBT, accepted by more than 13,000 institutions worldwide.
  • IELTS Academic, required by universities in the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia, with minimum scores typically ranging from 6.0 to 7.0.

For programs taught in Spanish, the Instituto Cervantes offers two main certifications:

  • DELE, an official diploma with no expiration date, recognized by the Ministry of Education.
  • SIELE, a flexible digital exam valid for five years.

The appropriate certification depends on the program’s language and the destination country. A strong command of English or Spanish not only broadens academic opportunities but also enhances international employability.

According to global trends in higher education and international mobility, studying abroad in 2026 will continue to be a strategic decision for those seeking a strong international career. Countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, and Germany remain leaders, while Barcelona is emerging as a top academic hub thanks to its university system, accessibility, and quality of life. Choosing the right destination requires balancing cost, visa requirements, language, and career goals. Investing in international education not only broadens horizons but also multiplies professional opportunities in an increasingly globalized job market.
