What is a Demand Planner?

To clearly define what a demand planner is, we need to introduce the following term within the logistics context: S&OP, which stands for Sales and Operations Planning. This concept captures the essence of the role performed by a demand planning manager: they are responsible for controlling stock, monitoring the products in the warehouse, and aligning them with demand to ensure a balance between what the market requires and what the company should supply.

A demand planner is an essential professional in countless industries, always linked to the logistics area within a company. Their daily work is directly connected with other business areas such as production, purchasing, and sales, among others. Their role involves not only controlling stock but also considering raw materials and resources that may be required, especially if the organization manufactures goods.

What does a Demand Planner do?

The demand planning manager, or demand planning lead, is responsible for managing a company’s products or services. It is their responsibility to prevent excess stock that may not sell (for example, seasonal items), as well as shortages that could lead customers to turn to competitors. This highlights the importance of hiring well-trained professionals with the right skills within the logistics area.

To better understand the functions of a demand planner, here are some of their main responsibilities:

  • Deeply understanding market needs, in collaboration with the sales department.
  • Forecasting demand for products/services based on market insights and context (time and location).
  • Determining raw material requirements (if manufacturing) and/or product needs based on forecasts.
  • Maintaining direct and continuous collaboration with the warehouse team to track stock levels accurately.
  • Analyzing the alignment between forecasts and actual sales/purchase data to adjust strategies.
  • Ensuring constant and immediate communication with all relevant departments.
